Every February the Piedmont Landscape Association hosts an annual seminar. This event strives to bring gardening enthusiasts and landscape professionals together in an educational setting.

Speakers
Peter Del Tredici
Peter Del Tredici is a botanist specializing in the growth and cultivation of trees. He retired from the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University in 2014 after working there for 35 years as Plant Propagator, Curator of the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection, Editor of Arnoldia, Director of Living Collections and Senior Research Scientist. He taught in the Landscape Architecture Department at the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1992 through 2016 and is currently teaching classes in Urban Ecology in the Urban Planning Department at MIT. In 2013, he was awarded the Veitch Gold Medal by The Royal Horticultural Society “in recognition of services given in the advancement of the science and practice of horticulture.” His research interests include plant exploration in China and Japan, the root systems of woody plants, the natural and cultural history of the Ginkgo tree, and plant responses to climate change.

Urban Nature: Human Nature Peter is the Senior Research Scientist at Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. He’ll be exploring spontaneous urban ecosystems and the positive contributions they have in making our cities more livable. |
Kerry Ann Mendez
As an award-winning garden designer, author and lecturer, Kerry Ann Mendez focuses on time-saving gardening techniques, workhorse plants and sustainable practices. She has been on HGTV and in numerous magazines including Horticulture, Fine Gardening and Better Homes & Gardens. Kerry Ann was awarded the 2014 Gold Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for her horticultural accomplishments. She has published four gardening books, her most recent – The Budget-Wise Gardener. In 2016 Kerry Ann introduced National Gardening Webinars t attended by thousands nationally.
Kerry has presented for many professional and green industry events including the Mid-Atlantic Horticultural Short Course Program; The Professional Landscapers School in Indiana; the 2015 annual Perennial Plant Association’s symposium; New England GROWS; Ohio CENTS trade show; and Cultivate 2016. The Right-Size Flower Garden: Exceptional Plants and Design Solutions for Busy Gardeners Kerry is the owner of Perennially Yours, LLC, garden columnist and author of several books. She will be discussing how to balance out our hectic, modern lifestyles by planning a garden that is less demanding, well-behaved and still beautiful. |
Lorraine Graney
Lorraine’s love of nature, her inquisitiveness and her father’s influence as a medical doctor helped fuel her passion for diagnosing plant problems. After obtaining her Master’s degree in Plant Pathology with focus on plant parasitic nematodes, she continued to hone her microscopic skills and provide research, extension and teaching support in Plant Nematology while working at Virginia Tech, USDA in Beltsville, MD and Michigan State University over a period of 10 years. In 2008, after a leave of professional employment of 22 years to raise two daughters, Lorraine began working as a Plant Disease and Insect Diagnostician for Bartlett Tree Experts. Throughout her working career, Lorraine has published numerous journal articles, one which involved describing and naming a new species of cyst nematode.

A Journey into the World of Pests Lorraine is the Plant Disease and Insect Diagnostician for Bartlett Tree Research Labs. During this presentation, plant samples will be examined under the microscope providing you with live views of insects, pathogens and the procedures used to assess them. |
Warren Byrd
Warren has taught and practiced landscape architecture for forty years. Though now officially retired, he continues to mess about the home territory here in western Albemarle County –gardening, creek walking, cooking and, mostly, sharing daily discoveries and adventures with his partner, fellow landscape architect Sue Nelson. Together they have contributed pro bono design efforts at Ivy Creek Natural Area and with the evolving downtown of Crozet. They also volunteer and support the Shenandoah National Park Trust in its ongoing effort to assist the Park’s many environmental programs.
